Dharamsala: England collapsed from a commanding position to be bowled out for 218 on the first day of the 5th Test against India despite a courageous 79 from Zak Crawley. The main wrecker was left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav claimed an incredible five wicket haul to put India ahead.

England chose to bat first and were in a strong position at 175/3 with Crawley appearing reliable. But as Kuldeep went through the middle and lower orders, the visitors’ fortunes drastically turned losing their final 7 wickets for just 43 runs. All ten English wickets were shared by the Indian spinners with Ravichandran Ashwin taking 4/5.

India responded with outstanding acceleration as opener Yashasvi Jaiswal carried on with his incredible form. Before being stumped down the leg side by Shoaib Bashir, his quick 57 laid the groundwork. With Shubman Gill batting at 26 and Rohit Sharma undefeated at 52 India was comfortably ahead at 135/1 at stumps.

After a closely contested opening session, Kuldeep’s amazing wrist spin spell allowed India to dominate the next two sessions. England’s batting woes against spin continued as Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Ben Stokes fell cheaply to Kuldeep Yadav’s magical spell of wrist spin. While Duckett and Pope were both stumped down the leg side, Stokes was trapped LBW by a brilliant wrong’un for a golden duck.

The threatening Joe Root who appeared to be well set on 26 was taken out by Ravindra Jadeja’s deft turning delivery that stayed low and caught him squarely in front. Ben Foakes, a wicketkeeper-batter who scored 24 runs until Ashwin’s crafty carrom ball knocked him over the gate.

Day 2: With nine wickets remaining and a deficit of just 83 runs, the home team will be aiming for a sizable first-inning advantage. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill looked assured at the crease, timing the ball sublimely to deflate the English bowling attack.
