The new football season is just around the corner, and teams are making their final preparations. While most clubs are aiming to improve on last year’s results, Mohun Bagan Super Giant has bigger goals. They are not only looking to defend their Indian Super League (ISL) title but also aiming to make a strong impact in the upcoming AFC Champions League 2. With top clubs from across Asia in the mix, the competition will be tougher than ever.
This makes the schedule for the Mariners even tougher and due to that, Mohun Bagan is not keeping anything unturned, even after getting a ban from FIFA.
New Mariner’s Arrivals
The defending ISL shield and cup holders will look forward to rewrite the history books in Indian football by winning back to back double in ISL and they are also looking to perform in the continental championship as well and for achieving this success, Mohun Bagan is down to building a solid team for this season.
They have already signed and announced the players, like Kiyan Nassiri from Chennaiyn FC and Abhishek Singh from Punjab FC. These two signings can play a crucial role in Mohun Bagan’s success this season, as Kiyan Nassiri will add an extra option on the wing in place of Liston or Manvir and he’s pretty quick and explosive and has also proved himself in big games, like scoring a hat trick against East Bengal. Along with that, he is pretty explosive as a player who can turn the game on its head with his own caliber.
Abhishek Singh is a young left back who is pretty versatile both while defending attacks or carrying out attacks, he can deliver crosses and also can play in both flanks, so he can play as a starter in place of Ashis Rai on the right as he is facing problems in that position for last two seasons and also can act as a backup for Subhashis Bose on the left.
According to some rumors, Mohun Bagan is also trying to sign Robson Robinho from Basundhara Kings to replace Greg Steward, a pretty similar kind of player who can act as a playmaker and as a goalscorer as well and this may increase the flair of the star-studded front line of Mohun Bagan.
Although, Mohun Bagan’s transfer market has been pretty quiet in comparison to last some seasons due to the ban they faced from FIFA and had to pay the fine to FIFA, yet they managed to sign two top class Indian Youngster for their team which already has a strong core and together they can make the dream a reality.
Possible Challenges for the Mariners
Although Mohun Bagan have made a strong side on paper, their challenges remain on the field. As the foreigners like Dimi Petratos, Jason Cummings, and Jamie McLaren will be joining the team late, as scheduled, the coach may face some problems as those players may become rusty after not playing for so long and also not getting adequate time to prepare themselves as the Durand Cup has already begun and Mohun Bagan will play their first match against Mohammedan SC with a total Indian core, which can act as a moral boost for the Indian players, but to achieve everything, their foreign players must step up.
Another possible challenge Mohun Bagan can face is having a hefty schedule, as Mohun Bagan will be playing in AFC Champions League 2 as well, which will make the schedule even more compact and hectic for the players. Due to this kind of schedule, players may experience tiredness, soreness and even injuries, and due to this, Mohun Bagan’s squad depth will play an important part in their success. If the bench remains strong, coach Jose Molina can use the quality on the bench to manage the workload of the players who are more fatigued.

Mohun Bagan will start their season through the Durand Cup on 31st July against Mohammedan SC and we have a idea about the plans with which Mohun Bagan is looking to play.
