Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes discussed the vacant Hearts managerial position, stating that “Ambition makes Hearts good proposition.” This follows Neil Lennon’s sacking on December 14, 2024, after a winless run. McInnes remains contracted to Kilmarnock until 2027.

Manager Reaction

Derek McInnes addressed speculation linking him to the Heart of Midlothian managerial role on December 20, 2024. He spoke with BBC Scotland’s *Sportsound* regarding the opportunity at Tynecastle.

“Hearts are a good proposition because of their ambition. They’ve got a really good group of players, good structure, good staff. It’s a club with huge potential.”

McInnes told BBC Sport. He also acknowledged the interest the position generates across Scottish football.

“I’m very happy at Kilmarnock… but Hearts is a job a lot of people would be interested in.”

He reiterated his commitment to his current club, as reported by The Herald. No formal approach from Hearts has been confirmed as of December 23, 2025.

Hearts’ Managerial Vacancy

Hearts dismissed Neil Lennon after a 2-0 defeat to St Johnstone on December 14, 2024. The club had failed to win in their previous 11 matches across all competitions under Lennon.

Sky Sports confirmed Lennon’s departure. The club currently sits 9th in the Scottish Premiership table as of December 22, 2024.

Owner John McClelland indicated a new manager appointment would occur “before the end of the year.” Interviews are ongoing for the vacant position at Tynecastle.

Current Contract Situation

McInnes signed a contract extension with Kilmarnock in May 2024. This deal keeps him at Rugby Park until 2027.

He has managed Kilmarnock since January 2022. The club was promoted back to the Scottish Premiership under his leadership in 2022.

Kilmarnock FC’s official site confirms his contract status. McInnes has consistently stated his satisfaction with his role at the club.

What’s Next

Hearts continues its search for a new manager. Candidates include McInnes and Aberdeen’s interim manager Neil Warnock. No appointment has been announced.

Hearts’ next fixture is scheduled for December 29, 2024, against St Mirren. Kilmarnock will play Ross County on December 28, 2024, at home.
