Dortmund closing in on big signing—this could flip the attack wide open

Borussia Dortmund is set to make a massive splash this summer, with reports suggesting that the club is eyeing up a move to sign one of the most talented forwards in England, Omari Hutchinson. Should it occur, then it would likely be a massive statement to them in the transfer market.

At just 21 years old, Hutchinson already has experience at Arsenal, Chelsea, and most recently Ipswich Town, where he played 31 Premier League games this past season. Although Ipswich Town is relegated in the Premier League, there was an exception: Hutchinson.

He scored 3 goals and 2 assists in 31 top-flight games, which is not a lot on paper, but the finer numbers are more telling here. Hutchinson also created 81 shot-creating actions over the season and ended up with an xG of 2.9 and an xAG of 3.5, indicating that he entered the final third regularly and had an effect. Those are good indicators of his future potential as a young player on a poor team.

What does Hutchinson bring to Dortmund?

Hutchinson is not refined yet, but this is what makes him a perfect choice for Borussia Dortmund. He already has raw skills that BVB adores to develop. His best attribute is versatility: he can be deployed on either wing or as a central attacking midfielder, providing Nuri Şahin with a lot of possibilities when it comes to forming the front four. His 1.78 successful take-ons per 90 minutes show that he is not only technically proficient but also not afraid of an opponent in a one-on-one situation, which is something unique at his age and could do wonders in Dortmund.

Although his former club had a disappointing season, Hutchinson never gave up; he pressed, chased back, and never dropped out of the game even when his club was losing. That attempt speaks volumes of the kind of person he is, which is precisely what the wide players of Dortmund will be asked to display.

Business-wise, he is once again a match to the model of the club: Jude Bellingham is another case of how a young talent can become a multi-year player or have a huge resale value. To a club that likes to develop its own talent rather than purchasing it in the form of a ready-made star, Hutchinson checks a short-term depth box and a long-term opportunity.

Where would he fit in Dortmund’s squad?

Now it got a whole lot more interesting. In case Hutchinson joins, it appears as:

  • He will be forced to share minutes with Julien Duranville at the right wing.
  • Karim Adeyemi may find himself under pressure in case he fails to find early form.
  • There is a suggestion of a change to 4-2-3-1, with Hutchinson playing in the hole behind the forward.

This is also an indication that the club is yet to be sure on its wide options. Whereas Adeyemi provides speed and Beier the versatility, Hutchinson would provide Dortmund with a more random, inventive edge.

Final Take

Omari Hutchinson is not coming in with a massive hype, but that is the reason it seems to be a Dortmund signing. Dortmund is the club that enjoys putting pen to paper on Premier League players who are simply waiting to blow up, and that is the feeling I am getting here.

In case the transfer does occur, he will immediately feature and could receive a decent amount of playing time. Provided things work out, Dortmund might have their next breakout star.

This one’s worth watching. Closely.
