NEW DELHI (March 30, 2024) – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is working hard to confirm India’s 15-man roster for the 2024 T20 World Cup which will take place in the USA and the West Indies. The announcement of the team is anticipated in the final week of April as per a BCCI source. This would give the selectors time to evaluate player form while the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season is still in progress.
Early Departure and Standby Players for T20 World cup
The BCCI is taking a strategic approach this year with the first batch of Indian players set to depart for New York immediately after the IPL’s league stage concludes on May 19th. This ensures early arrivals for players whose teams don’t reach the playoffs allowing for crucial acclimatization time in the USA.
“We learned from the World Test Championship final logistics last year” a BCCI source commented. “Sending some players early minimizes potential disruptions if injuries occur closer to the start of the World Cup.”
The BCCI is also anticipated to select a number of reserve players to travel with the main team. This offers protection in the event of last-minute injuries or unanticipated events.
IPL 2024: The Deciding Factor
The ongoing IPL 2024 season is a critical factor for players hoping to secure their place in the T20 World Cup squad. The national selectors led by chairman Ajit Agarkar are closely monitoring player performances in the high-pressure tournament.
“The IPL gives us a front-row seat to see who is in top form and who can handle the big-match atmosphere” the BCCI source said. “While international experience is key, strong performances in the next few weeks will definitely sway some selection decisions.”
But there have been no official workload management directives for players during IPL 2024. The BCCI acknowledges that communication between franchises, the National Cricket Academy (NCA) medical team and individual players is crucial to avoiding burnout or injury risks.

Potential World Cup Contenders
The focus is on some intriguing candidates fighting for spots, with well-known players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja anticipated to hold their seats. Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson are probably competing for a wicketkeeper-batter role while Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan are vying for a top-order spot.
There are many questions for the bowling section. The pace of Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik, the spin of Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi and the depth of all-rounders like Washington Sundar and Hardik Pandya are provided. For these players to increase their chances of making the World Cup, they will need to put up consistent IPL performances.

The ICC has set a May 1st deadline for all participating teams to submit their initial squads with the flexibility to make changes up until May 25th. India is set to play all its group stage matches in the USA, kicking off their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign against Ireland in New York on June 5th.
