Manchester United Yet to Open Contract Talks With Harry Maguire

Manchester United hasn’t opened any formal talks about extending Harry Maguire’s contract. That’s the word right now. It’s late January 2026, and the big defender’s current deal runs out at the end of the 2025/26 season. So, he’s looking at becoming a free agent in summer 2026 if nothing changes.

This situation is a bit odd, honestly. Maguire, who turns 33 in March, has been playing some of his best football this season. He’s formed a really reliable partnership with Lisandro Martinez in defence. But still, nothing from the club on a new deal.

United’s Stance and Maguire’s Form

Maguire signed for United back in 2019 on a six-year deal. He’s been on around £190,000 a week. Now, as of January 1, 2026, he’s been eligible to talk to foreign clubs about a pre-contract agreement. And apparently, they are talking.

Clubs from Serie A in Italy and the Turkish Super Lig have already contacted his agent. That shows there’s serious interest out there. You have to wonder what United is thinking here.

It’s not like United’s defence has been solid all season. They’ve conceded 34 goals in just 23 Premier League matches, which is the most among the top-12 teams. The Maguire-Martinez partnership, though, has been one of their more consistent pairings.

He’s put in some standout performances, like against Arsenal and Manchester City recently. According to Goal.com, “Harry Maguire faces an uncertain future at Manchester United with the club yet to open formal talks over a contract extension.”

Outside Interest and Market Challenges

There are reports that Maguire actually wants to stay at Old Trafford. Sources say he prioritizes a new deal with United over any moves overseas. But if United isn’t even talking, what’s he supposed to do?

It’s not just foreign clubs either. Chelsea is reportedly monitoring the situation, thinking about him as a free agent option. That’s a big move for a free transfer.

And finding a replacement isn’t going to be easy for United. Marc Guehi already transferred to Manchester City.

Dayot Upamecano is expected to extend his deal at Bayern Munich. So, the market for top centre-backs is getting tougher. United knows replacement costs are high. You can see why they might want to keep him, especially when he’s playing well.

The Financial Equation and a Looming Decision

There’s also a financial angle to all this. The United squad faces a 15-20% pay cut if they don’t qualify for the Champions League. That could impact negotiations for everyone, including Maguire.

But there’s some conflicting information on an extension option. OneFootball reported that United could offer Maguire a one-year extension. But then, a different report from OneFootball stated he “will leave at the end of the season after United opted not to trigger their one-year extension.” So, it’s not entirely clear what United’s plan is, or if they even have one yet.

With summer 2026 creeping closer, the club needs to make a decision. Keep a player who’s performing and wants to stay, or let him walk for nothing? It’s a big call, and United seems to be taking its time with it.
