Roger Binny turns 70: BCCI Presidency in Turmoil Amid Age Limit Controversy

The incumbent president of the BCCI, former Indian cricketer Roger Binny, has passed the age of 70, which is the maximum age limit required of any BCCI official to hold the top post in the committee as per the Supreme Court-authorized BCCI constitution. Now, a few questions are being asked: Will Binny continue to be in his position or resign?

BCCI Constitution laws

On page 30 of the BCCI constitution, it is said that if any BCCI Official turns 70, they will be disqualified and have to leave the position. The age-related provision in the BCCI’s constitution was adopted under the Supreme Court of India in response to the recommendations of the Lodha Committee (Justice R.M. Lodha Committee). Some internal sources claim that there is internal conflict in the BCCI, as no quick action is being taken.

While some members contend that the article does not automatically require resignation in the absence of a formal challenge or direction, others maintain that the constitution ought to be upheld in all situations. But, according to some close to the former Indian cricketer, it is not necessary that any formal agreement is signed and he can continue to stay on till the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the BCCI, which is sometime in September. The Sports Governance Bill is expected to be tabled and passed during the current Monsoon Session of Parliament. The new bill is not very oppressive on the age factor, unlike the current BCCI constitution, which allows the members of the national sports federation to continue holding the post until they reach the age of 75 years.

Who is going to be the next BCCI President: Rajiv Shukla?

Rajeev Shukla, a seasoned cricket administrator and former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman, and currently the vice president of the BCCI, is one candidate who is gaining popularity as rumors about Binny’s potential departure grow, and it is expected that Rajiv Shukla can be a strong contender to take over the president role.

According to sources, Rajiv Shukla has a strong political background, and his long-term association with Indian Cricket makes him the board’s top pick for a seamless transition. One of BCCI’s sources said, “As per convention, the senior-most office-bearer takes charge in such a scenario. Shukla will perform that role until fresh elections are held in September.

Moreover, his nomination would ensure critical ongoing developments, like India’s 2026 ICC T20 World Cup.

No Official Statement from Roger Binny or BCCI: Rumours buzzing!

As of now, neither the BCCI nor Roger Binny has uttered a word about this matter! There is still no clarity on what exactly is going to happen and who will be the president. High officials could not be available off the bat to comment since they were present at the just-accomplished ICC Annual Conference in Singapore.

In the case of Binny, he too preferred not to speak out. After attending an away test in London at the Lord’s, he took time off earlier in the year on his 70th birthday and flew to Thailand to celebrate the event in his hometown of Bengaluru.

Roger Binny

Cricket fans and cricket experts have shown concern and kindness on social media. People speak in praise of what Binny has done, especially in enhancing the welfare of players and the conduct of domestic cricket, but on the other hand, there are concerns that rules should not be flaunted since a person is highly respected.

How and when the bill is passed by parliament may be the deciding factor on the contributions that Binny will make to the presidency. From renowned cricket player to BCCI president, Roger Binny’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. However, the board is under pressure to enforce its regulations as it surpasses the constitutional age limit.
