Future Aspirations | Optimistic about securing a spot in IPL, believes in his son’s deserving talent |
Swastik’s father Surender Chhikara himself a long-distance runner aspired for his children to pursue sports. To facilitate Swastik’s cricketing dreams Surender not only became a cricket coach but also transformed a part of his 2.60-acre field into SS Nalanda Cricket Hostel a cricket academy in Ghaziabad. The academy inaugurated by former India spinner Maninder Singh became a haven for 13 aspiring young cricketers including Swastik.
The initial struggle to find a dedicated coach for Swastik led Surender to take matters into his own hands. He built a turf wicket with nets introducing variations in his bowling techniques as he trained Swastik. Facing challenges like missing nets and poles and the need for a dedicated practice facility during monsoons Surender displayed remarkable resilience.
To cater to Swastik’s interest in pace bowling Surender purchased a bowling machine in 2015 showcasing his commitment to his son’s cricketing development. Despite juggling his responsibilities as a sub-inspector and instructor with the Delhi police Surender traveled extensive distances daily to ensure he was present at the coaching center for Swastik.
Swastik’s cricketing prowess became evident as he scored prolifically notably hitting 585 runs in a local tournament in 2019. His performances in age-group cricket and the UP T20 League caught the attention of various IPL franchises leading to trials with Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals.
In the 2023-24 season, Swastik made his List A debut for Uttar Pradesh leaving a mark with a century on his Vijaya Hazare debut. His standout performances in the UP T20 League where he scored three centuries and two half-centuries positioned him as a potential prospect for the IPL.
As the mini-auction approached Swastik’s father expressed optimism about his son finding a buyer in the IPL. Regardless of the outcome Surender believes in his son’s deserving spot in the league acknowledging that if it doesn’t happen this season it will in the next.
Swastik Chikara’s journey is a testament to the dedication, hard work and innovation of his father Surender Chhikara, who turned challenges into opportunities to nurture his son’s cricketing talent. As Swastik continues to make strides in his cricketing career the cricketing world eagerly awaits to witness the rise of this young and promising talent from Uttar Pradesh.
