Vicario Crowns Europa League Win as Career High Point

Guglielmo Vicario has pretty much nailed down his best career moment. The Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper recently called their 2024-25 Europa League victory his absolute career high. It’s a huge statement, especially after a year full of pretty dramatic ups and downs for Spurs. This comes after an earlier comment about a massive Premier League draw too.

From Etihad Heroics to European Glory

Just a little while ago, it seems like, Vicario was making headlines for a different reason. He had a standout performance against Manchester City on December 29, 2024. Spurs drew 3-3 at the Etihad, coming back from 2-0 down. Vicario made seven saves, including a really critical one-off the line in stoppage time. He was easily man of the match, you know? And that result stopped City’s four-match winning streak.

After that game, Vicario told Sky Sports,

“This is the highest point of my career so far, for sure.”

Everyone was talking about it. Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou even said,

“Vicario was outstanding… that save was unbelievable.”

It felt like a truly special moment for him, honestly, as BBC Sport reported.

But then, 2025 brought something even bigger. In an interview wrapping up the year, Vicario had a new highest point. He actually picked Tottenham’s 2024-25 Europa League victory. He told Sky Sport Italia,

“Without a doubt, the Final in Bilbao. It was the highest point of my career.”

Lifting that trophy with Tottenham was, according to him, “even more special.” It had been a few years since the club won anything, you know? So, this was a massive deal. Winning the Europa League isn’t just the highlight of the year, he said, but of his “entire career so far.” That’s a pretty strong claim, as OneFootball highlighted.

Vicario’s Journey and Evolution at Spurs

Vicario joined Tottenham in the summer of 2023. He came from Empoli for around £17m. Since then, he’s really become their first-choice keeper. By December 2025, he’d already played 78 matches for Spurs, with 69 of those in the Premier League. He’s kept 22 clean sheets, which is pretty solid. And in the 2024/25 season, he was leading the Premier League with a 94.7% save percentage. Pretty impressive, right?

He’s definitely had to adapt to English football. He mentioned it “technically roughened me up a bit.” The physicality, especially at set pieces, really tests keepers. He’s learning and growing, which is exactly why he chose England and Tottenham, he said. He was looking for something different.

Vicario also picked up the nickname “Venom” during his time in Italy, because of his fiery temper. And we saw a bit of that this season. Apparently, he had a pretty vocal outburst at 18-year-old Lucas Bergvall during a game against Leicester. Bergvall gave the ball away, and Vicario, well, he let rip. But he admitted he was “too aggressive” and apologized.

He said it was “not the right way to scream at him.” He’s embracing a leadership role now, something Ange Postecoglou had talked about. Postecoglou called him an “outstanding human being” as well as a great goalkeeper, according to AllFootballApp. And that’s pretty clear from his actions too, like housing a Ukrainian mother and son in his family home.

Last season, set-pieces were a bit of a struggle for Spurs and Vicario. Teams would target him at corners. You might remember Ben White grabbing at his gloves during the North London Derby. Vicario didn’t even realize it at the time. He says you just have to deal with it, and he’s always looking to improve.

A Season of Highs and Lows Under New Leadership

This season, Tottenham brought in a new coach, Thomas Frank, last summer. Vicario has been pretty complimentary about Frank. He said Frank creates a really “close, personal connection” with the players. He’s a very “trustworthy person” and has great “human depth.”

But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. Spurs had a pretty dismal 4-1 defeat against Arsenal, for example. Frank apologized to the fans for that one. Vicario also admitted the team “didn’t fight” as a collective. That loss saw Spurs record their lowest expected goals in a Premier League match so far this season, which is not good.

Frank’s tactics even got questioned, especially starting with a 5-4-1 system that completely backfired. Jamie Carragher, the Sky Sports pundit, said Frank needed to be more positive, not just pragmatic. He said managers at top teams need to coach teams to “win games” not just “stop the opposition.” This was all covered by Sky Sports.

Despite those bumps, winning the Europa League is a huge step for Tottenham. For Vicario, ending that long wait for a trophy clearly means everything. He wants to be remembered, he said, because “if we do it at Tottenham we will be remembered for life, for eternity.” And he’s definitely made a big mark already. Spurs will be looking to build on this success, aiming for Champions League qualification and maybe even more silverware this season. Their next match is against Preston in the FA Cup on January 4, 2025.
